Stroke Rehabilitation: A Guide for Patients and Families

October 20, 2026

A stroke can affect movement, balance, speech and everyday independence. Rehabilitation helps the brain and body relearn skills, and families play a big part in recovery. This guide explains what to expect.

When should rehabilitation start?

As soon as the medical team says it is safe. Progress is often fastest in the first few months, but people can keep improving long after that with regular practice.

What neuro physiotherapy works on

  • Getting in and out of bed, sitting and standing up safely
  • Walking and balance, including advice on walking aids if needed
  • Arm and hand use for everyday tasks such as eating and dressing
  • Strength and stiffness in the affected side
  • Preventing falls at home

We set clear goals together at the first assessment, such as walking to the dining table or going up stairs, and plan sessions around them.

How families can help at home

  • Encourage the person to use the affected side in daily tasks, not only the stronger side
  • Practise the home exercises between sessions. Little and often works best
  • Keep walkways clear and add support where needed, such as grab rails in the bathroom
  • Be patient, and celebrate small gains

Family members are welcome at sessions to learn how to help safely.

Signs of another stroke: act fast

If you notice sudden face drooping, arm weakness or slurred speech, call emergency services or go to hospital straight away. Time matters.
